A man who is tired of Pattaya has blown all his cash – ThaiVisa
There’s no better place to be on a Friday afternoon than speeding down the Chon Buri expressway out of Bangkok bound for Sin City. Although these days it’s next to impossible to go there alone – my wife’s many things, but stupid isn’t one of them.
It’s not the edgy place it once was, but there are few places on the planet that can hold a candle to Pattaya when it comes to people watching.
I remember being on Walking Street for the first time eating a 60 baht kebab at 2.30 in the morning. I was staying at the Jasmine hotel on the appropriately named Soi BJ. During the day I would take a walk down to the Bali Hai pier and escape to the air conditioned oasis of Central Festival when required – before a late afternoon siesta.
Soi BJ is home to one of my all time fav bars in Thailand – ‘Toos’ run by Otto and his wife. He crafted the Koi that sits on my right shoulder. If you’re looking to get a tattoo while in LOS, do make a point of stopping in and having a chat with him. Great guy and skilled tattoo artist alike.
It’s a shame the old Soi 6 Corner bar has gone, it was the meeting point for running the gauntlet down the Soi. But alas it’s all changed and these days you’d be lucky to even be called a ‘handsome man’, let alone dragged into a bar by a throng of thirsty girls.
I love the sauna on soi 10 and go there every visit. It will disappear one day I’m sure to make way for another hotel. THB 180 entry fee and that includes a jug of ice water and a slice of watermelon. Easy to spend a few hours there doing a circuit of reading a book, sweating in the sauna and cooling off in the whirlpool.
Beer is cheap, like 55 baht for a small bottle cheap. Try getting those prices in Bangkok. Good luck.
I like the Soi 13 area as it’s easy to grab a baht bus (songtaew) to get around. The Haven was great for food but I hear that’s it’s gone now. Plenty of hotels, but make sure it has a pool and avoid Walking Street, LK Metro and Soi 7 unless you’re heading there to party as you won’t be able to sleep until the music dies down in the wee hours.
