Reminiscing with Retropie

Reminiscing with Retropie

Showing my age now. Time to work on building up my 2nd Rasberry Pi. This time I’m going to install Retropie and see if I can get one of my old games up and running. • Step 1 – Download Retropie

It’s 612MB so will take a while. Enjoy a nice cup of tea while you wait and read the installation guide. Don’t attempt to download a file this large via HTTP. Timed out for me, so I used FTP instead. Downloaded via my webhost using wget, copied into my FTP home directory then used FileZilla to download from…

Pimping out the Pi

Pimping out the Pi

Thought I should keep track of the apps I’m installing on my Rasberry Pi. • Dolphin (file manager) • vim (editor) • PHP 7.0 • nginx (web server ; removed apache2) • pinta (graphics) • VLC media player • ufw (uncomplicated firewall) • x11-apps (xclock, xcalc, etc) Update nodejs curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_7.x | sudo -E bash – sudo apt-get install -y nodejs Networking Plugged in the ethernet cable and it just worked! Nice one. However we no longer have eth0? It’s now exnb827eb071dfd and it isn’t configured via /etc/network/interfaces Explanation found here: Predictable Network Interface Names are not new, but…

Joining the Rasberry Pi revolution

Joining the Rasberry Pi revolution

I picked up a few Rasberry Pis from Amazon.com and I’m glad I waited a while so I could get the Pi 3, which seems to be a step up from its predecessor in terms of performance. Amazon.com now delivers to Thailand and includes taxes in the shipping so there’s no more to pay. This is a huge step forward as previously dubious import charges were levied by the courier. Thankfully a thing of the past I can now browse Amazon with confidence. As a bonus, it only took 3-4 days to arrive at my doorstep. Yeah! My total was…

Emmet & Notepad++ on Ubuntu

Emmet & Notepad++ on Ubuntu

Had a wander around the web in the wee hours of this morning and came across Emmet which I thought looked interesting so I downloaded npp to get it going. I’ve been hand-coding my HTML for 18 months now which has been a great learning experience. It’s getting a little tiresome now and I need some help 🙂 Opened and installed with Wine and guess what? It just worked! Amazing. Next I had to get the plugin manager going which is no longer bundled with npp. Grab it here Note the C:/Program Files folder is under the (hidden) .wine folder…

Ditching the junk food for 30 days

Ditching the junk food for 30 days

Because I’ve been eating too much of it lately. And boy do I love those double Big Macs! For the record I weighed in at a svelte 118 kg at the start. Would be happy to lose a couple of kg over the coming month. Junk food – food that has low nutritional value, typically produced in the form of packaged snacks needing little or no preparation. So no Dominos, Pizza Hut, Pizza Company, KFC or Maccas for the next 30 days. An experiment of sorts. Not a diet. Using the principle of kaizen I want to be aware of…

Fixing search in wordpress

Fixing search in wordpress

Hey folks – I noticed it wasn’t working here anymore. Sorry ’bout that! Here’s what I had to do to get it back on-line: Firstly, I reverted back to the default WP search using the Search widget in the sidebar. I was previously using a plug-in and wasn’t sure if it was playing a part in my problems. (I had recently switched hosting providers and made changes to my site and home URLS) After adding the widget, it threw the search box in a strange place on the sidebar. Had to get that sorted. Used the following CSS in my…
