The sun sets on Shashin

The sun sets on Shashin

It appears the popular Shashin WordPress plugin is no more. Although its developer Mike Toppa stopped supporting the plugin a number of years ago, it has now been pulled from the WP plugin repository and usage documentation seems to have disappeared. No surprise really, as Google has been slowly but surely killing the integration with Picasa after launching Google Photos (Google acquired Picasa in 2004). I’ve blogged about Picasa pain before. http://www.craigamos.rocks/picasa-pain-persisits/ http://www.craigamos.rocks/google-photos/ Additionally, the Picasa desktop application no longer works. Where does that leave the existing user base? The plugin still works for existing Google albums, at least. You…

Tuning fpm-php: Not for the faint of heart

Tuning fpm-php: Not for the faint of heart

Another tech Sunday – they never get old 🙂 This is a somewhat long and boring post. More of a tech journal entry. But who knows, maybe someone else will find it interesting. First let’s backtrack a little – what is CGI you ask? source: https://www.irt.org/articles/js184/ An acronym for Common Gateway Interface, CGI was the first implementation of a server-side ‘gateway’ where http could interact with external applications such as databases. Although CGI is language agnostic, typically PERL scripts were used. CGI is rarely used today due to inherent security vulnerabilities. Then there’s fastcgi And then there’s php-fpm (FastCGI process…

Last run to Savanakhet

Last run to Savanakhet

Is there anything worse than traveling when sick? Yes – being in Laos and not being able to imbibe the glorious local beer on offer there. And so it was when I had another early morning departure from Don Meung, flying into Ubon Ratchatani under cloudy skies. I took the Nok Air ‘fly and ride’ service and traveled to Mukdahan by van along with one other passenger – luxury! From the Ploy Palace hotel I grabbed a quick energy drink which I chugged in the back of a tuk-tuk bound for the Friendship Bridge II before crossing the border into…

Long Gone – Remembering Oz

Long Gone – Remembering Oz

Bizarre travel plans are dancing lessons from God. Wow – four years have passed since I was last in Australia. With some cash in my pocket (how times have changed!) I took my new bride Down Under to visit my homeland. It was a long (5 weeks) and expensive trip, but she got to see a fair bit in her first visit. Our overall itinerary went something like this: Bangkok to Darwin via Singapore.  SQ975 and SQ5203. (Arrived 28 June, 2018). Stayed 2 nights at The Cav and 4 nights at Palm City Resort Darwin to Sydney (3 July, 2014)…

Beer porn: A pilgrimage to Plzeň

Beer porn: A pilgrimage to Plzeň

There’s an old Czech joke which goes something like this: A kid walks into a bar and asks for a beer. The bartender says “wouldn’t you rather have a lemonade?” “Yeah”, the kid replies, “but I’m three crowns short” Welcome to the Czech Republic – the country where beer costs less than water.  A few months back I needed to get out of Thailand for a while. The heat, the wife, and the bad beer had all conspired to plunge me into the depths of despair – it was time to escape long enough to clear my head. Being a…

Happy Hour Whores

Happy Hour Whores

We’ve discovered a nice little roof-top bar close to the crib. No, I won’t share the location with you as I want to keep it all to myself for the next few months (along with all the Chinese tourists, of course!) Their 2 for 1 drink deal includes a couple of local beers and some cocktails, so we tucked into Heineken for 60 odd baht a glass and Long Island Iced Teas for 120. Don’t forget the ++ (10% service charge and 7% VAT) which adds nearly 20% to the bill – don’t tip as you are already paying one!…

Praise the Lord – A weekend escape to Ban Chang

Praise the Lord – A weekend escape to Ban Chang

The only upside to us now having a car is weekend getaways have become a thing. A good thing. Last weekend we headed to Ban Chang, a few hours drive south-east of Bangkok. Having booked into the Lord Nelson Hotel, we wasted no time in heading for the bar after checking-in. It’s a great little hotel, with a beaut ocean-front bar. Somehow the beers taste a little better when looking out at the ocean on a sunny afternoon. I’m not sure why. Probably because relaxation had taken hold. After a kick-ass English breakfast on Saturday morning, we headed to Khao…
